himalayan stories series (2010): narrative paintings
Resolve-Rabbit. Gouache on paper, 8.5x5.5," 2010. In a past life, the Buddha was a magic talking rabbit, the companion of an ascetic who lived alone in the forest. One summer, there was a terrible drought, and the ascetic began to long for home. "I would rather jump into these flames than see you abandon your resolve, dear friend!" said the Future Buddha Rabbit. The ascetic resumed meditation & in due time was liberated. The thangka-painting student resumed her minutious applications of color & in due time a Green Tara was completed. The handprint form of this painting is borrowed from a Sakyapa painting in the Rubin Museum (though the hand itself is mine!)
